Obituary of Dorothy Howard

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA: DOROTHY NELL BOYD HOWARD left this earth peacefully on June 3, 2010, at the age of 89 years, surrounded by her loving family. She was a native of Rosedale, Virginia but for the last six years had resided at Columbia Cottage in Birmingham, Alabama. Dorothy was the last surviving member of her family and was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Taylor Howard; two sisters, Jerry Rowe and husband, Dave and Frances "Bobbie" Boyd; three brothers, Raymond J. Boyd and wife, Nancy, Ellis J. Boyd, Jr. and wife, Marguerite and Moran Boyd. She is survived by her son, Larry Howard and wife, Sharon of Birmingham, Alabama; daughter, Kay Carter and husband, Charlie of Goodview, Virginia; two grandchildren, Kayse Carter of Goodview, Virginia and C.J. Carter of San Francisco, California. She was retired from the Russell County School System after working for 19 years at Honaker Elementary. She will be fondly remembered as a caring and loving person who always displayed an abundance of humor and laughter throughout her life. The family would like to thank the staff of Columbia Cottage, Birmingham, Alabama for their compassion and caring while she made her home there. Celebration of life services will be held Monday, June 7, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Elk Garden United Methodist Church in Elk Garden, Virginia with the Reverend Dr. Ralph Kidd and the Reverend Clyde Hester officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Elk Garden United Methodist Church. The family will also receive friends at the church Monday at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Internment will follow in the Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon, Virginia.
