Obituary of Joyce Untiedt

Joyce Shields Untiedt, 49, of Atkins died Monday, March 22nd, 2004 in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Born on March 24th, 1954 in Bluefield, West Virginia, she came to Marion in 1968, was a 1972 graduate of Marion Senior High School and a 1976 graduate of Radford University with a B.S. Degree in Education. Mrs. Untiedt had taught at Chilhowie High School for the past 20 years, was the sponsor of the Tri-Hi-Y and was a member of the National Education Association and also was a member and trustee of Stone Memorial-Nicks Creek Presbyterian Chapel. She was preceded in death by her father, Stanley Roger Shields in 2000. Surviving are her husband of 30 years, Thomas G. Untiedt of Atkins. Two sons, Jason Thomas Untiedt and Jerod Alden Untiedt of Atkins. Her mother, Lucille Pruitt Lusk of Bluefield, West Virginia. Two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Fred Pettrey of Princeton, West Virginia and Diane and Johnny Estep of Waynesburg, Kentucky. One brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Juanita Shields of Marion. One half-brother, Russell Todd Lusk of Bluefield, West Virginia. Her step-mother, Connie Harris Shields of Marion. One step-brother, Steve Harris of Lynchburg, Virginia. Her father and mother-in-law, Miles and Jane Untiedt of Marion. Two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Michael and Mary Untiedt and Tracy and Donna Untiedt, all of Marion. Several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, March 25th at 5:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel conducted by the Rev. Neville Mozingo, Steve Reedy, Principal of Chilhowie High School and Jim Sullivan , Superintendent of the Smyth County School System. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Joyce Shields Untiedt Scholarship Fund, c/o of Chilhowie High School, P.O. Box 2280, Chilhowie, Virginia 24319.
