Obituary of Elizabeth "Betty" Bane Tate

MARION, Va.

 

Elizabeth “Betty” Bane Tate, age 93, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021.

 

Betty graduated from Marion Senior High School in 1944 and Mary Washington College in 1947. She was a 5th generation member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Royal Oak Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed reading, knitting, “recipe cooking” and canning. Some of her grandchildren’s favorite dishes were her deviled eggs, chive sandwiches, garlic grits, and orange pudding. Betty enjoyed playing bridge with family and friends for many years.

 

Betty’s professional endeavors included two years as assistant band director in Warwick County, Virginia, where she met her future husband, and an enjoyable 12 years teaching 4th graders at Marion Intermediate School. In 1970 she became an associate with John Tate Realtors. Betty attained her broker’s license in 1975 and continued working for many years at John Tate Realtors, later Century 21 and now Royal Oak Realty. She was also an active member of the Southwest Virginia Association of Realtors, serving as secretary, treasurer, and vice president.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John C. Tate; her parents, Janie Anderson Bane Hyland and William Bane; her grandparents, Cora Wolfe “Annie” and Robert Anderson, Lulu and William Bane; her stepmother, Peg Burke Bane, and stepfather, Chester Hyland.

 

Betty is survived by two daughters, Carol Tate Edmiston and husband, Charles, and Susan Tate; grandchildren Katie Huber, Ivan Huber and wife, Corey, Erin Huber Atkins, and husband, Lorin; and great grandchildren, Elin Atkins, Arie Atkins, and Cyrus Ramsey; half-brother, Tom Bane and wife, Karen; and half-sister, Judi Bane Segerdell.

 

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 1p.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Rose Lawn Mausoleum.
