Obituary of Nile Linkous

BRISTOL, TENNESSEE: NILE DUNN LINKOUS, age 79, died Thursday, November 17, 2005 in Cambridge House Nursing Home, Bristol, Tennessee. She was born April 18, 1926 in Meadowview, Virginia to the late Carl and Lena Dove Dunn. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Marion, Virginia. She attended Mary Washington College, transferred to Emory and Henry College where she received her B.A. degree and later earned her masters degree from the University of Tennessee. In 1943, along with her sister, Eva, she designed and hand painted a set of china for Cumbo China, which was presented to the Queen of England during her stay at the Martha Washington Inn. Mrs. Linkous, or as she was affectionately called, "Mama Nile" by her students, was a school teacher, guidance counselor and art teacher for 43 years in Marion. Her great love for people was apparent as she shared her artistic gift. She gave art lessons at the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home and worked many years teaching adult education which assisted adults in obtaining their GED. Mrs. Linkous was instrumental in the development of the Hungry Mother Arts and Crafts Festival. She is survived by her husband, Gordon W. Linkous of Bristol, Tennessee. Three sons, Woody Linkous of Crossville, Tennessee; Johnny Linkous of Monterey, Tennessee; and Alan Linkous of Bristol, Tennessee. Four grandsons, Erik, Lee, Jason, and Derek, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, November 20, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeff Lambert and Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Entombment will follow in Rose Lawn Mausoleum, Marion, Virginia. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
