Mrs.Linkous never knew what an influence she made on my life, because I never got the chance to tell her since I hadn't seen her since my 1956 graduation. I had her not for Art, which she was so good at teaching I'm sure, but for English Lit. either in eighth or ninth grade. She really made our class come alive with her joy of teaching, and influenced me to a great love of books and learning. She was truly a delight and to know her was to love her. I'm sure Heaven is a little brighter with the presence of her spirit. JoAnn Dancy Branch Class of 1956

I was saddened to learn about the death of Mrs. Linkous. She was one of my two favorite teachers in high school. To those of us with no God-given talent for art, she was still encouraging and kind. She gave me a life-long appreciation of artists and their work. The world was a better place for her having been here, and a sadder one by her leaving. Sincerely, Kay Ford MSHS Class of '66

Mrs. Linkous was our teacher, Class of '56. She and my Dad, Fred McDonald were great friends and all of us appreciate her talent and the way she motivated so many people to be interested in art. We have collection of many of the calendars that her art students produced as money-making projects----two of those pieces are hung as pictures (Mt. Carmel Methodist Church and Ebenezer Lutheran Church). She influenced hundreds .....We are thankful that she touched our lives and those of our family. Sincerely, Marty and Gene Copenhaver

We are so sorry to hear of Nile's passing. We have been her neighbor here in the Tri-Cities Golf Villas since Sept. 2003 and loved visiting with her and Brindy. Her love for cars, for her sons/daughter-in-laws, and grandchildren was uplifting. Her artistic abilities astounding. When she first entered the hospital for lung surgery, we became close neighbors and were happy to check in on her, help walk Brindy, but marveled at her independence as she would drive out of here in her 300Z. We were blessed to be close that day to help when Nile's car was hit (not her fault either) and she needed a ride home as her car needed to be towed away. We visited her when she was in Bristol Regional, then HealthSouth, Holston Valley and finally Cambridge. We teased her that with Teresa and I in health care, she could run to various hospitals, but we would find her anyway. We learned she and Ed shared the same birthday, just a couple of years apart (1926 and 1957). We also saw her desire to go back to her home here slipping away as her health did not improve. Her mind was sharp as she would communicate with us up to our last visit (Sunday, 11/13), her body was just too tired. She is in a much better place where she no longer is restricted in her breathing, a place where her body does not keep her from getting out of the bed and go! Nile was the first person who greeted us when we moved to the Tri-Cities Golf Villas and always told you "love you bunches" when you left visting her. She was an inspiration to many. A good friend of ours, Cindy Burchette Salyer (from Marion) was deeply influenced by Nile growing up. As we understand it, when Cindy's father died suddenly, Nile was there for her in a big way. We were thrilled to get them back together, even if for a short while. Nile was an incredbile lady and will be missed. If we can do ANYTHING during this difficult time, please call upon us. Ed and Teresa Herbert, 145 Eagle View Private Drive, 423-323-2515.
