Obituary of Charles Lewis Harrington
MARION, Va.
CHARLES LEWIS HARRINGTON, age 94, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Carrington Memory Cottages of Daleville, Va.
Charlie loved his family, his country and community. Charlie served as a U.S. Army Air Corps Supply Sergeant in Alaska during World War II. Later he earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and then a Juris Doctorate from Washington & Lee University. Charlie started practicing law privately in 1954. After 28 years of practice he was appointed as a Special Justice for the Virginia Mental Health System and served in that capacity for over 26 years. He was recognized in 2006 by the Virginia State Bar Association for over 50 years of service. In his time, he was instrumental in chartering the Sugar Grove Life Saving Crew; and served as legal advisor and a member of the Marion Life Saving Crew, where during a special project he and the crew collected enough Green-Stamps to purchase a 1965 Dodge 4 wheel drive ambulance that is still in the possession of the Marion Fire & EMS Department. He was a staunch supporter of our local police officers who he always felt were underpaid and underappreciated. Charlie loved being outdoors – hunting, riding in, looking at, or buying a car, or telling stories about his dad’s country horseback medical practice. He devoted his life to service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. R.H. and Ruth Harrington; and brother, R.H. “Bob” Harrington, Jr.
Charlie is survived by his daughter, Jane Harrington and husband, Chris Ruffa of Midlothian, Va.; sons, Charles P. “Charlie” Harrington and wife, Cindy of Marion, Va., Michael L. Harrington and wife, Laura of Cloverdale, Va., David P. Harrington and wife, Tonya of Troutville, Va. and William D. “Bill” Harrington and wife, Barbara of Bedford, Va.; four grandchildren Jason, Sara, Preston and Annepreston; three great-grandchildren, Iain, Grayson and Moira.
