Obituary of Carolyn Calhoun Jones
MARION, Va.
Carolyn Calhoun Jones, age 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at English Meadows Senior Living, Abingdon, Va.
Carolyn was born in Marion, Va. to the late Quincy Albert and Kathleen Gwyn Calhoun. She attended college at Farmville State Teachers College for the first two years, and then transferred to Richmond Professional Institute (now known as VCU) where she graduated. Carolyn taught school for a number of years, then was a secretary and also substitute teacher. Earlier in high school, she and her future husband Don, were voted "Romeo and Juliet" their senior year. She was also selected to be in the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Va. Carolyn was a lifelong active member of First United Methodist Church in Marion where she sang in the choir for 25 years, and also sang for many weddings and funerals. She was President of United Methodist Women, and also Circle Chairman. Carolyn was a wonderful mother and wife, and a beautiful soul who was loved by all. Her greatest joys were her husband, children, and grandson.
She was preceded in death by her adoring husband of 61 years, Donald D. Jones; sister Rosamond Calhoun McCarty and Rosie's husband Jackson B. McCarty, Jr.; brother-in-law Robert E. Jones, Jr.; sister-in-law Joanne W. Tallent; and nephew Allan D. Jones.
Carolyn is survived by daughter Kathleen Jones Cook and husband, Brent of Wytheville, Va.; son Quincy Calhoun Jones of Phoenix, Az.; grandson Parker Calhoun Jones of Mesa, Az.; three sisters-in-law, Patricia Fry Jones, Charlene Burnop and husband, Ron, Linda Lox and husband, John; brother-in-law Warren Tallent; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at English Meadows and Caris Hospice Healthcare for their extraordinary care and kindness.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 30, 2021 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 115 South Church Street, Marion, Va., with the Reverend James Bennington officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, Va. The family will receive friends Thursday from 4 until 6:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel, Marion, Va.
