Obituary of Robert "Bob" Powell, Sr.
MARION, Va.
Robert “Bob” Powell, Sr. age 77, passed away Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie, Va.
Bob was a loving husband, father, and popa. Mr. Powell was a proud member of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army, and retired as First Sergeant of the Drill Sergeant Unit in Dublin, Va. He worked as an Engineer for more than 40 years with Brunswick / General Dynamics and retired to spend time in his wood shop where he continued his 50-year loyalty to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church where he helped with many projects, including their expansion. He loved his community and was active in many civic groups. Bob was a past President of the Kiwanis Club and very involved. He and the love of his life for 52 years, Shelby were actively supportive of their children and community. Bob’s smile and gentle way will be missed by all who loved and knew him.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Infant Boy Powell and Travis R. Powell; parents, Otis and Bessie Medley Powell; brothers, Jack, James, Douglas, Otis, Randolph, Fred and Roy Powell, and Curtis Medley; sisters, Kay Kegley, Ollie Mae Tarter, and Phyllis Ann Lowman.
Bob is survived by his wife, Shelby Marchant Powell of Marion, Va.; sons, LTC. Robert L. Powell, Jr. and wife, Cathy of Tampa, Fla., and Danny Powell and wife, Jessica of Kingsport, Tenn.; sister, Rose Powell Gillespie; sister-in-law, Norma Hart and husband, Billy, all of Marion, Va.; brother-in-law, Johnny Marchant and wife, Linda of King, N.C.; grandchildren, Jonathon Hughes and wife, Shannon of Mastic Beach, N.Y., Cheyanne Powell of Gainesville, Fla., Emily Kimmins and Cheyenne Kimmins, both of Kingsport, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Diane Fannin, Anne Gillespie, and Ernie Olinger; and a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 29, 2018 at 2p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor Jim Bangle, Pastor Jonathan Hamman and Pastor Ed Schaak officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by Virginia Military Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday, from Noon until 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
