Obituary of Rosamond Calhoun McCarty
MARION, Va.
Rosamond Calhoun McCarty, age 90, passed away Sunday, December 17, 2017 at English Meadows Senior Living, Abingdon, Va.
She was born December 6, 1927 in Marion, Va. to the late Quincy Albert and Kathleen Gwyn Calhoun. Mrs. McCarty was educated in Smyth County Public Schools and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Richmond, Richmond, Va. She taught school in Smyth and Montgomery County for several years. Mrs. McCarty authored two bible study books, “Prayer: The Language of the Spirit” and “Citizen Saints”. She survived polio in her 20’s and went on to lead an extraordinary life. Her passion was to teach the bible and spread the gospel which she did for many years. Mrs. McCarty served her church and community by working on several boards and committees and received numerous awards and accolades, however she only wanted to be remembered as a good and faithful servant to her Lord.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Jackson B. McCarty, Jr.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Spiller and Edward McCoy; and brother-in-law, Donald D. Jones.
Mrs. McCarty is survived by her three children; daughters, Gwyn M. Snider and husband, Jeff of Hampstead, N.C., Laura M. Waddell and husband, Chris of Nashville, Tenn.; son, Jackson B. McCarty, III and wife, Donna of Marion, Va.; six grandchildren, Beattie Sturgill and wife, Ali, Dr. Emma Sturgill, Joseph Ruckert and fiancée, Dr. Margalit Haber, Quincy Ruckert and wife, Erika, Katherine McCarty, and Grayson McCarty; sister, Carolyn Jones; three nieces, Linda Wittenstein, Spiller Gregory, and Kathy Cook; nephew, Cal Jones; and their children, and numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church with Pastor Alan Gray and Pastor Steve Cathcart officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 19, 2017 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. A private family graveside service will be held at Rich Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
