When I was a child & all of Edith's aunts & uncles were still living,it was carved
in stone that every summer a family reunion was held at Uncle Willie's house. It
was mandatory attendance if you had a grandparent, aunt, uncle, brother, sister or
any remotely related person in that clan. Cousins arrived from far & wide-whether
we liked them or not.Aunts & uncles who smelled differently than we did, hugged, kissed,
patted heads & made the inevitable comments about growth (length & width). I griped
about going, but my dad & grandmother made it plain that I would go & I'd be polite; after
all these were grandma's brothers & sisters! It wasn't all bad. The food was fabulous! Everyone
brought their best dishes & plenty of it. There's nothing better than those old fashioned
dishes loaded with, butter, cream, lard, fat back & all the things we now know will lead to an
early demise. The memories of Uncle Willie standing at the top of the porch stairs, hymnal
in one hand & bible in the other, leading the entire motley crew in song makes me smile & get a little
misty-eyed. Cousin Ruth's huge poster boards of the family tree & the long dissertation that
went with it were BORING then. How I wish I had paid attention now that I'm into genealogy.
Once,my dad killed all of cousin Lonnie's snakes that were in a make-shift cage in the front
yard,by whipping them over his head & snapping their heads off. Daddy got applause & gratitude.
Lonnie got mad. It was years before Lonnie spoke to Daddy. Edith was there for all of it. We
laughed about it many times. Daddy & Edith were born a month apart. They were close friends
as well as cousins, even if Daddy did always call her his older cousin.
I talked to Edith recently & we reminisced about those times & how we wished it was still
mandatory to have & attend those reunions. But times change & death creeps in to steal
away the very reasons it's called a family reunion. Thanks for the memories,Edith! I hope
you dance! Always, Phyllis
