Obituary of Jack Dewell
Jack Linwood Dewell, Sr. - August 17, 1932 - December 30, 2012
Jack Linwood Dewell, Sr., known to some as Captain Jack or Skipper, passed away on Sunday, December 30th, 2012. He had been a resident of Charlotte Hall Veterans Home for the past 4 years, and was in Virginia visiting with his family for the Christmas holiday.
The Captain was born and raised in mid-western Kansas, and attended Southwestern College. He joined the Marine Corps in 1953, and was a part of the Korean conflict. He also spent time in the Philippines as an instructor. He was well known as a marksman and hands-on instructor. He was strong and tough, but also a man of kindness and compassion. After many years, he was happy to be reunited with his "Grunts" from the 2/9, and they're friendship meant so much to him, as did his friends at the Veteran's center in Silver Spring, MD.
After the military, he dedicated most of his life to photojournalism and master carpentry. A creative person, with an eye for form, he captured amazing images on film, and made wood come to life in the form of beautiful reproductions and original creations.
His favorite pastimes included photography, reading, listening to jazz and blues music, crossword puzzles and enjoying sports. He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and college basketball. In his youth, he played basketball, hiked and ran, parachuted and raced cars. In more recent years, he was most happy relaxing in his recliner, with a game on the television or music on the stereo, a crossword in his lap and a full pipe.
He was passionate about music, most especially Jazz and Blues. His knowledge was as deep as his passion, and he had many friends in the music community of Baltimore and D.C.
The Captain is survived by his son and two daughters, Jack Dewell, Jr. and wife, Dora, of Sugar Grove, VA; Elizabeth Cason, and husband, John, of Sugar Grove, VA; Kristin Bell, and husband, Sam, of Radford, VA; 2 stepchildren, Robert Schmid and Betsy Schmid, of Maryland; 9 grandchildren, many cousins and an even greater number of friends. He was truly loved, and will be greatly missed. His family will conduct a private memorial. If you wish to remember him through a charitable donation, we believe that he would be pleased if you would consider the educational or veterans organization of your choice. Personal thoughts and remembrances may be shared here, and will be appreciated by all who knew and loved him.
