Obituary of Philip Smythe
MARION, VIRGINIA: PHILIP MICHAEL SMYTHE, age 65, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at his home in Marion, Virginia.
Mike grew up in Marion, Virginia as a member of Christ Episcopal Church and later attended Ebenezer Lutheran Church. He graduated from Marion Senior High School in 1965 and attended Roanoke College where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi. He then graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1969 and was employed by the Smyth County School System for 33 years. Mike spent his life teaching others on the basketball court, on the golf course, and in his classroom. He was a loyal friend to many. He recognized and appreciated the value that each one brought to his life.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Smythe of Marion, Virginia; his father, Philip C. Smythe of Reading, Pennsylvania; one sister, Patricia Smythe and husband, Robert Scott Nase of Reading, Pennsylvania; niece, Susan Nase Mitchell and husband James and nephew, Philip Scott Nase and Fiancée, Marcy Raiser also survive. Mike was a beloved and integral part of each of their lives and will be forever missed.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church with Reverend Andrew Bansemer and Reverend James H. Bangle officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church.
There are no words to express how thankful Mike's family is for the outpouring of love and support from the community near and far.
