Mike and I were each others first roommate at Roanoke College. We immediately became best of friends, and I would have to say he was a big reason that I joined Pi Kappa Phi. As Sweetheart of the fraternity, Betty got to know all of the Pi Kaps well. I know she agrees with me that he was one of the best of us. I regret that the only time we saw Mike again was at a 20 year reunion. We were privleged to meet Liz and thought that they were made for each other. Mike and I emailed several times after he became ill. I know I wouldn't have had the courage he showed. He was truly exceptional and will be missed by many.

My family and I were so sorry to hear of Mike's death while on vacation at the beach this week. My mother and I regret that we will not be able to attend the service but wanted you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this dificult time. I was NOT one of the lucky ones to have Mr. Smythe for 6th grade and boy was I jealous of seemingly everyone who was....BUT even from down the hall in Mrs. Peery's room he made an impression on me in the hallways, or the cafeteria, or just letting me come to his room for those few minutes at the end of the day before the bus came. He remained a good friend as I became a teacher and I can honestly say I think that Mike and Liz Smythe were the kind of teachers that everyone who wanted to be a good teacher emulated and aspired to be more like! He will be missed by many but made a mark on many which will help his memory to live on. Please know that we are thinking of you Elizabeth! Marsha, Kokie, Ellen and family

What a good friend Mike has been through the years since Miss Earley's 4th grade class. I am blessed that I was able to laugh and talk with Mike through the years, but especially during these past few months. One of God's greatest gifts is our memories of the good times shared and experiences re-lived, when a loved one crosses over from the dying part to eternal living. In trying to find some comfort at a time like this, we all need to put our trust in the Lord and know that we'll see Mike, and our other departed classmates again. As the lyrics from a southern gospel song say: There is a "Hello" after "Goodbye". A blessed reunion promised in time. We will be with them longer than we were without, no doubt. No more tears in our eyes in that beautiful, wonderful "Hello" after Goodbye"

Mr. Smythe was THAT teacher for me. He was my all-time favorite - EVER. I met him when I was 8 and hoped that I would be lucky enough to have him as my teacher when I was in 6th grade. Thankfully, I was. That was a rough year in my family and Mr. Smythe was so sensitive to that and provided much needed comfort to me. I know without a doubt that God intentionally placed him in my life and am so thankful, even to this day. I stayed in touch with him ever since that 6th grade year and always loved hearing from him. He loved life, loved Liz, loved his family so much. And golf. :) I am so, so sad about his passing and hope that he knew all that he meant to me. Liz and family, I am lifting you all up in prayer. Praying for God's comfort and peace to overwhelm you. Mike was loved by so many and his fingerprint is forever imprinted on the world through all the lives that he touched.

Mrs. Smythe, My sixth grade year with you and Mr. Smythe was one of my favorites! I remember on the first day of school he told us the story of how he met you...of looking across the hall through the chalk dust. Since the classrooms were across from each other it was the perfect set up for a perfect story. He had us laughing the whole time! You both have left a lasting impression on me. Today I am a math professor and Mr. Smythe is a large part of that because he taught me to enjoy math. Together you gave me models for what a great teacher should be...full of love and life. We loved him because we knew he loved us and cared about our success. The memories I made that year are priceless and precious. He left a legacy.

I can remember coming from Oak Point school to Marion Intermediate and he was my teacher and I can say he was the best. WE never had a dull moment and God has given him such a talent to teach and how he was loved. I know everyone wanted in his class. I was priviledged to be one of those students and the thing is he never forgot your name even years later. I will miss seeing him and he always asked about how my kids were doing and the dipdog. Heaven gained a great man and will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.

Liz and family, One of the finest people I've ever known....so many memories of "The Silver Haired Fox"....all warm and fuzzy. I could have watched him and Susan dance forever and be as spellbound as I am by rainbows and the smell of rain and the beauty of newly fallen snow...he has been a treasure in every way to each and every one of us. Liz, your soulmate will never die as long as you are alive.

Dear Liz, my heart breaks for you. Life is so hard and Satan is alive and well making it as difficult as he can. I'd like to encourage you to try and deal with one second at a time and then God will help you build to a minute, an hour and a day. May God's arms surround you and nestle you to him as He teaches you to walk again. With sincere sympathy, Sharon Buchanan

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Smythe's illness and passing. He was a special part of my education as my 6th grade teacher in 1987-88. He remained one of my all-time favorite teachers and he stayed in touch with me for many years after I left his class. I will always remember the kindness he showed me over the years. He was truly one of a kind and half of a fabulous, special couple - I treasure the memories of the time in class with both of the Smythes. Many thoughts and prayers are with you, Mrs. Smythe. Much love, Rebecca & Eric Horvath, Emily, Caroline & Charlotte
