Obituary of Samuel May
MARION, VIRGINIA: SAMUEL DAVIDSON MAY, JR., age 83, died Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Mary Brown May; two sisters, Sara May Jessee and Mariamne Symons and a nephew, Dr. Samuel Davidson Jessee.
Samuel was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church. He was a graduate of Tazewell High School, Hampden-Sydney College and the University of Michigan. Samuel also attended the University of Virginia. While at the University of Michigan, he played golf and was an outstanding Intramural Champion. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force as a member of Strategic Air Command. He was also a member of the 1954 championship winning Air Force Pacific Air softball team. Samuel was a teacher at Tazewell High School and Marion Junior High where he also served as assistant principal. He taught Latin at Marion Senior High for 20 years. He loved sports and for 75 years was an avid fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
He is survived by his wife of 52 ½ years, Lynn Cormany May of Marion, Virginia; daughter, Michelle "Bunny" May Tallent of Knoxville, Tennessee; brother-in-law, Dr. Edgar Forrest Jessee of Richmond, Virginia; grandson, Samuel Benjamin Tallent of Knoxville, Tennessee; nephew, Dr. Edgar Forrest Jessee and wife, Becky of Richmond, Virginia; two great-nephews; two great-nieces; special friends, Don and Eleanor Martin and Buck and Peggy Pickard all, of Marion, Virginia.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Johns Catholic Church with Father Paul Maier officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
