Obituary of Betty Hawks
MARION, VIRGINIA: BETTY JO COOK HAWKS, age 83, died on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
Betty was born in West Virginia, but grew up in Smyth County. She was the daughter of Fred and Essie Blevins Cook, and she was married to Grady Hawks, who died in 1992. She was preceded in death by her brother Willie Cook and her sister Lucille Blevins.
Betty worked at the local Sears store for 40 years, then retired to become an active volunteer with the Friends of Hungry Mother State Park, Smyth County Community Hospital Ladies' Auxilliary, the Sheriff's Department, and Red Cross Bloodmobile. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and she particularly enjoyed singing with the Joyful Noise Choir.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Hawks, and her beloved brother James Cook. Betty loved the company of many relatives and friends, especially her dear friend Sue Morrell.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Reverend Jonathan Jonas officiating. Private burial will follow in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, Chilhowie, Virginia. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, Betty requested that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, Virginia 22312.
