Obituary of Charles Kirk
MARION, VIRGINIA: DEWEY KIRK, age 107, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Francis Marion Manor in Marion, Virginia.
Mr. Kirk had been a farmer in Smyth County for many, many years. He was an extremely faithful and very active member of Valley View Baptist Church, serving as Trustee. He gave generously of himself and his resources to the betterment of the church and community. His special passion was for improvements to the Kirk Family Cemetery. Mr. Kirk was instrumental in developing a paved road in the cemetery and fencing to protect the area. He was committed to having burial plots honored with floral tributes and carried that responsibility himself through his 107th year. He realized that donations alone were not enough to adequately care for the cemetery and he then established a Perpetual Care Plan. He was dedicated to giving something to the community that would last forever. Mr. Kirk truly attained his goal as his family, friends and members of the church benefited greatly from his wisdom and generosity to others.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susie Gertrude Hutton Kirk; his second wife, Pauline Scott Kirk; and his son, Charles Kirk.
Mr. Kirk is survived by two step-daughters, Sylvia Scott West of Sugar Grove, Virginia, Linda Scott Blevins of Seven Mile Ford, Virginia; step-son, Charles Earl Scott, Jr. of Marion, Virginia; one brother, Howard Kirk of Chilhowie, Virginia; seven step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; several step-great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. at Valley View Baptist Church in Sugar Grove, Virginia with Pastor Roger Frost officiating. Graveside services will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Kirk Family Cemetery in Sugar Grove, Virginia.
