Obituary of Maxine Gunter
PITTSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA: MAXINE CLEGG GUNTER, age 83, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at her residence. Maxine was born November 26, 1927 to Henry Grady and Pearle Batten Burns of Chatham County, North Carolina. She was head-teller for many years and retired from First Citizens Bank. Mrs. Gunter loved flower gardening and Duke Blue Devils basketball. While a member of Chatham United Methodist Church, Maxine served as treasurer.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Atwater Clegg, Sr. in 1979, her son William Atwater Clegg, Jr. in 1971 and second husband, Lee Gordon Gunter in 2009.
Survivors include her daughter Kay Clegg Clawson and husband Randall and their children, Susan Lynn and Brittany Renee Clawson, all of Marion, Virginia; step-son Doug Gunter and wife, Diane of Sanford, North Carolina; step-daughter Martha Thompson and husband, Joe of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina; step-daughter Reba Thomas and husband Ronald of Sanford, North Carolina; four step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Stout of Sanford, North Carolina; brother-in-law Lynn Clegg and wife, Rose of Moncure, North Carolina; brother-in-law Bynum Clegg and wife, Juanita of Apex, North Carolina; sister-in-law Mary Margaret Griffin and husband, Burnice of Pittsboro, North Carolina; sister-in-law Becky Clegg of Raleigh, North Carolina; sister-in-law Marie Johnson of Wilmington, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, at Chatham United Methodist Church in Moncure with Reverend Patrick Sinclair and Reverend Ray Gooch officiating.
