Obituary of Rex Greer

Rex L. O. Greer ATKINS, Va. Rex L. O. Greer, 82, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2010, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va., after a nine year battle with Multiple Myeloma Cancer. Rex was born in Grayson County, Va., and was the son of Leonard Ottis and Beatrice Reedy Greer. He was preceded in death by brothers Hurley, Harry, Worth, Jack, and sisters Hazel, Blanche, and infant sister Freda. Surviving siblings are sisters Edith Cox and Vella Harmon of Marion, Va. He is also survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Smith Greer, of Atkins, Va., daughter Gina Greer of New York City, daughter Lesa Keyes of Marion Va., and son Rex II, and his wife Amy, and their two sons Rex III, and John Thomas Greer, of Charlotte, NC. Rex attended Marion Senior High School, Wake Forest University, and the National Business College. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict , later retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 40 years of loyal service, and was elected President of the Virginia Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was very active in his community and worked as a licensed real estate broker and appraiser, as real estate was his passion. He also served as former State Vice President of the VA Assoc. of S&WCD, former President of the Kiwanis and Ruritan Clubs, as well as Superintendant and Lay Speaker for Davis Memorial United Methodist Church. Rex was a devoted husband, a committed father, and worked selflessly for the betterment of the people he loved and those within his community. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Saturday evening, June 19, 2010, at the Seaver Brown Funeral Home in Marion, Va., with a service immediately following at 7pm. Pastor Bill Schoeneman and Reverend Mike Sage will preside over the services. The family will have a private burial service on Sunday at the Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion, Va. The Greer Family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all the health care workers that provided loving care and support over the last nine years of Rex's life. Those of special note include the staff at the Cancer Outreach Center and Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va., especially those doctors, nurses, and staff members in the ICU and on the fifth floor!
