We will always treasure the fun times we had with Jay. He was always smiling, telling jokes, talking about flying, and always so thoughtful of other's. We met Jay and Linda in 1968 while we were in the military service in San Diego. We lived in the same Apt. complex. We were all so young and far from our families back home, so we became a "little family" of our own. We had our first daughter "Keri Dawn" in San Diego, whom Jay and Linda adored and named their first daughter "Cherie Dawn" a few years later. Linda and I exchanged letters for many years while raising our families. It wasn't until September of 2003, 35 years later, when we finally got to meet up with each other once again. It felt as though we had turned back the clock!! Jay drove us "Washingtonians" (who had never been to the east coast) all over the area where they lived, giving us a history of all the homes and people who lived in Rural Retreat. The area was so beautiful - which obviously had to add to the quality of Jay's life! We walked around the "Hungry Mother" Park and admired the fall leaves adorned with brillant colors, and talked about years gone by. We also got to meet Brian and Cherie, whom we had heard so much about over the years, and you could tell Jay was so proud of them and we were so honored to finally get to meet them! We also met his 2 handsome grandson's, who are adorable with their southern accents - we can still see the smile on "Grandpa Jay's" face that day!! We also got to meet Katie, Jay's sister, who was so warm and friendly and had the same sparkle in her eyes that Jay had. We are so deeply sorry for your loss. We know that Linda is being taken care of though by such a close and loving family. We wished we weren't so many thousands of miles away so we could hug each and every one of you. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers and may it comfort you in knowing Jay is no longer suffering and is watching over his family and comforting you. God Bless. Love, Cherie & Wayne Jinkens

To the family of Jay Burkett, Please accept my condolences for your loss. Jay was a fine man, with whom I had the great pleasure of working. Jay was always a positive person who cared deeply about his family, friends and community. I always enjoyed talking with Jay about his love of flying. I will miss him and am terribly sorry that due to the distance and being in the middle of a shutdown at our facility, I will not be able to pay my respects in person. I am a better person for having known him and will always remember Jay fondly. With deepest sympathy, Carl Webb
