Obituary of Jean Canter

MARION, VIRGINIA: JEAN CANTER, age 74, died Monday, July 19, 2004 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was a member of Elizabeth United Methodist Church and a graduate of Radford College and University of Virginia; she taught school in Japan, Wyoming, and Virginia's Prince William and Smyth County where she retired from Marion Middle School in 1994. She loved children and was dedicated to teaching them. Mrs. Canter was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Martha Griffitts and a sister, Lenore Griffitts Rouse. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Robert Mike Canter of Marion, Virginia. Two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Vera Canter of Naples, Florida and Roy and Terry Canter of Pembroke Pines, Florida. Three grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, and Sara Canter all of Naples, Florida. Four sisters, Mayme Churchill of Abilene, Texas; Louise Pugh, Lucille Kinkade, and June Shuler all of Sugar Grove, Virginia. Memorial Services will be held, Thursday, July 22, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Elizabeth United Methodist Church, Sugar Grove, Virginia, with Rev. Kenneth Conner officiating. A private burial will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elizabeth United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Joanne Barton, 242 Dickeys Creek Road, Sugar Grove, Virginia 24375.
