MARION, VIRGINIA: LaPRIEL MARTIN, known to her friends as Penny, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 7, 2009. Born LaPriel Angela Flora on October 14, 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was the daughter of Bertram Damon Flora and Mary Elmea Wiseman, and the widow of Jack Phillip Martin. She leaves behind five children, Jack Phillip Martin, Jr., and wife Patricia of Marion, Virginia, Dr. Bertram Damon Martin and wife, Virginia of Seeley Lake, Montana, Robert Stephen Martin and wife Kathleen of Spanish Fork, Utah, Pennylynn Maxwell and husband Stephen of Mesa, Arizona, Merry Elmea Holmgren and husband Adam of Glendale Arizona; twenty grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her younger brother, Donald Flora of Salina, Utah. Penny had a love for the theater and got her nickname from a role she played at South High School in Salt Lake City. After attending the University of Utah, she and her husband worked in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. for the duration of WWII. Following the war they settled near Pittsburgh, PA where they raised their family and she continued acting in summer stock theater. Upon retirement they moved to Sun City, AZ, where she lived until she came to Marion in November of last year to live with her son. The family held a private memorial service in the home in her honor. At her request, the body was donated as an anatomical gift to further medical research.
