Dearest Gert, Gordon, and entire Widener Family, I wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you often. I was very saddened to hear of Charles's passing. I'll always remember his quick wit and infectious smile! He will be truly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him!

I was saddened to hear about the death of Mr. Widener. I became friends with him when the new bridge was built over the river just below his home. I was the State Inspector on the bridge. Almost daily I would see Mr. Widener's Ford truck with his dogs following coming down his lane. He would pull up to my office trailer, then the stories would begin from farming to our love of the New York Yankees of old to our gardens and would usually end with stories of his beloved dogs. I last saw him about six months ago when I stopped by to say hello, his hip was bothering him. He told me he was going to have surgery on it. We exchanged Christmas cards while Mrs. Widener was living. I will always have fond memories of him. My sorry and prayers are with all his family. Sincerely, Rick Hall

Nan, Gordon and the Widner Family, I am deeply saddened to hear about Charlie's passing. He was a dear man. He and Evelyn were very precious to my grandparents, LJ and Grace Rector. I did not get to spend much time around him but I came to know him and Evelyn through the stories that my grandfather and grandmother would tell about the days on the farm. They were always there for my family. Even though most of my memories of Charlie date back to when I was a child, I was comforted when I saw Charlie's smiling face after the passing of my mother and grandparents. The valley won't be the same without him.

Nancy and family, How very sorry I was to hear of your father's passing. Charles was one of the first farmers I met when I came to Smyth County in 1971. He and Evelyn were so nice to me while I worked at the Farm Service Agency office, and I cherished there friendship. When I lost my parents, they were so kind to call and express their sympathy. Please know that you are in my prayers. Saunder Gordon
