Dear Nancy, David, and family, I think of Dr. Smith as a rock in the town of Marion....what a blessing he was to many people and to the community. My father and mother had great respect for him. Personally, I remember him as a kind gentleman who always smiled and encouraged a little girl as she grew up at First United Methodist and even when she was grown and visiting her family. God bless you in this difficult time. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as you deal with your loss. "Double O" was a wonderful person and a Doctor that remembered what the word truly meant. He cared for our parents, grandparents and many more. For example, Steve and Marie Hash, whom he knew because they were fellow Grayson countians. My Grandfather, Steve, was accidentally shot by his own brother as they were hunting separately in November of 1964. He was brought to Marion General from Grayson county. At age 64, he had been riddled with buckshot and his lung was collapsed. He lived to be 92 years of age. We respected Double O" as a person and friend, as well as, the only Doctor to even consider for surgial needs. Many, many thanks to him and to you, his family, for sharing him with us. We will miss his smile, his white hair, his graciousness. We hope knowing how much everyone loved him, each of you will receive many blessings in the days to come. Love, Roger and Frances Bales

In January of 1963 Dr. Smith saved my life when I was in a sledding accident at age 15. He spent 8 1/2 hours in surgery with me and attended to my needs for 48 more days as I recovered in the old Lee Memorial Hospital. My family was poor and didn't have the means to pay Dr. Smith. He told my parents that he didn't save my life, but that a higher power above should be given the credit and that he needed no compensation. I believe both had a hand. I can't express in words how I feel and how my parents (now deceased) felt about this wonderful doctor. I have been privaledged to shake his hand and personally thank him on three occassions. The community of Smyth County has suffered a great loss. My sincere condolences to all of the family of Dr. Smith
