Obituary of Raymond Smith

ATKINS, VIRGINIA: RAYMOND E. "GENE" SMITH, age 71, died Monday, November 20, 2006 in Carilon Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born January 26, 1935 in Saltville, Virginia to the late Edgar Smith and Ora Lee Davis Smith. Besides his father he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Brown and Opal Thomas; One brother, Buck Smith. He was a member of Francis Marion VFW Post # 4667, and a veteran of the United States Army serving active duty from 1954-1962. He was later employed by the Department of Army from 1962-1972 as a production controller, D.G. Mouldings from 1972-1975 as a purchasing agent , Smyth County Sheriff's Department from 1975-1977 as a magistrate and deputy; and Merilatt Industries from 1977-1992 as a shipping supervisor. Gene was also a member of the Masonic Lodge; and Cedar Bluff Baptist Church for many years, where he served as trustee and Sunday school class president for several years. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth Helen Comer Smith of Atkins, Virginia; Three daughters, Kathy Smith Chapman and husband, Larry of Wytheville, Virginia; Judy Smith Crigger of Atkins, Virginia; and Jeanie Smith Somerday and husband, Shawn of Montreal, Canada; His mother, Ora Lee Davis Smith of Marion, Virginia; One brother, Joe Smith, of Marion, Virginia; Five grandchildren, Eric Chapman, Tara Chapman, Cody Burgess, Helena Somerday, and Ana Somerday; Several Nieces and Nephews. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Eddie Beck and Rev. Grady Byrd officiating. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post # 4667. The Family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at www.seaverbrown.com.
