As we all get older we tend to remember those who made an impression in our lives. Mrs. Winters happens to be one of those people in my life. I think her purpose in life was well defined. She was a caring person. Thank you for sharing her with all of us whose lives she touched. My deepest sympathies are with you and your family.

I was fortunate to have Mrs. Winters as a teacher while attending Marion Senior High. She was focused and dedicated to all of her students and treated each as individuals. She touched so many lives with such a positive influence it was blessing to have known her.

Dear Marvin and family, What a sweet, kind and courageous lady was Marlene. I will miss her. A friend and brother in Christ of mine...Marvin Pennington...related this story regarding Marlene a few months ago when Marlene was in ICU. I went in to visit her there one day with Marvin and told it to her. On Wednesday evening after learing of her death and before Bible Study, he told it again. May I share it with you. Marvin said that he was a rowdy teenager and was ready to quit school...had already turned in his books. He said that Marlene asked to speak with him and spent the next several hours talking to him. Marvin said that he didn't quit school on that day and that when he graduated, that Marlene kept her word and was the first to shake his hand after receiving his diploma. He said that he believed her to be the most fair educator who he encountered in the school. I know that there must be hundreds of stories just like this. May God bless each of you and give you comfort and peace in the days, months and years ahead. Love, Janice

Marvin and Family, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I remember well your courtship (often conducted under the curious stares of us, your students). You both contributed so much to our school system in Smyth County, and such a legacy never dies. Teresa (Scott)
