Obituary of Paul David Greer
MARION, Va.
Paul David Greer, age 84, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Nina Lee and Cecil Greer; siblings, Martha Lee Greer and Rhodes Greer; and cousin, Punch Greer.
Paul Greer was a loving husband to Tissie for 64 years, a supportive and proud father to Leesa and actively engaged in the lives of the ones who called him Grandpa Paul. He was a huge Emory & Henry Football fan, a Paul Harris Fellow in the Marion Rotary, an adventurous eater, crossword puzzle addict; and, if you knew Judge Greer, a clear speaker who meant what he said. Paul loved to tell stories and had a wonderful sense of humor. Paul graduated for Marion High School in 1954, then Emory & Henry in 1958 and after graduation from UVA Law School in 1961, he set up his private practice in Marion. In February of 1993, Paul became Assistant Commonwealth Attorney and ultimately, a Juvenile Domestic Relations Court Judge. After retirement, he was a substitute judge until 1999, and then began his proudest work as a facilitator judge in the Judicial Performance Evaluation Program. There his key objective was self-improvement for judges. This is where the clear-decisive Judge Greer was in full effect. Paul Greer’s love for family, community and Virginia’s Judicial System was unmatched and not often replicated today. Judge Greer will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Paul is survived by his wife, Clarissa “Tissie” Yost Greer of Marion, Va.; daughter, Clarissa “Leesa” Greer Lawrence and husband, Gregory Rhea Lawrence, of Marion, Va.; brother, Richard Allen Greer, Marion, Va.; grandchildren, Lori Ariana Lawrence and Nigel Rhea Lawrence; nephews, Michael Greer and Rusty Greer; and grand dog, Moon Pie.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery with Reverend Dr. James Bennington officiating. Family and friends attending are asked to follow the COVID-19 Safety & Social Distancing Guidelines.
