Dear Family,
I didn't know your Mom. I read her obituary today in the News Virginian. I've read two unforgettable obituaries in my life; her's was the second. (The first was for an aerospace engineer who had built a luggage carrier for the family station wagon and when they went on vacation out west in the mountains and rounded a corner, it came loose and sailed off down into the valley below, with all the luggage!)
What is so unforgettable about your Mom’s obituary is not that she was such a remarkable woman, which she was. Or that she overcame such odds and accomplished so much, which she did. But rather, that she was so incredibly and exquisitely loved by her family. That shines with every word. How fortunate you are to have had her for so long, and she to have had you. May your memories comfort you forever.
Kindest regards and condolences,
Emily Bardeen

Joan has been an irreplaceable part of our lives. She could be valiant, maternal, gentle, outspoken, and hilarious
all within the same conversation--all facets of her personality. She loved her friends of many, many years, and
loved to see their younger generations coming along. She knew and could converse about anything, and we did.
She loved facts, knowledge, and most of all wisdom, and was happiest when she found her Creator, which is
the true wisdom. She was galvanized at that point to serve him faithfully to the end of her days.
Joan had a strong sense of justice, and her many, many acts of quiet kindness in secret may be known mostly only
by those who benefitted, but will never be forgotten. And so her Heavenly Father, who looks on in secret, will reward
her (Matt 6:4). We So look forward to the day when we see her again

Joan was such an enjoyable friend an encouragement to our family. We had many good times as we shared a lot of similar loves together. Always ready to head out on another adventure to one of our favorite spots and always appreciating Jehovah’s creations along the way made for some memorable trips. We’ll miss her for now but can’t wait til we can do it all with her when she’s “vertical” as she liked to say! Rest in Jehovah’s memory Joan.

Too many wonderful memories to recount. Joan was such an inspiration to our family. Mentor, teacher, dear friend, surrogate Mom and Grandma. A beautiful example of strength and faith no matter what struggles she faced. She would want us to press forward despite our sadness and obstacles. We were thankful and honored to have her with us although briefly. I told her the day she passed that when she wakes up...we will dance. We loved her dearly.

So sorry to learn of Joan’s passing. I first met Joan when I was about 16 and she had developed an interest in the Bible and what it taught. I can remember her at my wedding in Staunton VA. She was one of the most interesting and intelligent ladies that I knew at that time. I am now proudly 68 and have considered her a friend all these years. It has amazed me how she has overcome health issue after health issue and still held on to her faith. She had a personality that couldn’t be duplicated and to some, it was a good thing...she had her moments! Her faith in the promises the Bible holds out, I think really motivated her to keep going. She really wanted to see God’s Kingdom usher in a world of blessings like those mentioned in Revelation 21: 3,4. For now she is in a safe place, Gods memory, but her hope is found in Job 14: 14,15 and I will be looking for her. Rest for now my dear friend. Peggy & Tony Clements
