Obituary of Garnett Hayes

MARION, VIRGINIA: GARNETT "GABBY" HAYES, age 73, died Friday, September 2, 2005 at his home in Marion, Virginia. Born May 13, 1932 in Grayson County, Virginia, to the late Hobert and Carrie Pennington Hayes, he was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the United States Army, retired from the Brunswick Corporation after 43 ½ years of service and then worked with his family at Hayes Carpet Company. Gabby was a member of the American Legion Post #18, the Smyth County Moose Lodge, and was an avid horse trader who never met a stranger, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a good friend to all. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, O.D. Hayes and one sister, Louise Blevins. He is survived by his wife, Marcella Blevins Hayes of Marion, Virginia. Two sons, Gary Lynn Hayes and Terry Gwyn Hayes and wife, Kay all of Marion, Virginia. Two sisters, Agnes H. Pennington and Doris Taylor both of Marion, Virginia. One granddaughter, Caitlin Hayes; three grandsons, Taylor Hayes, Jamie Hayes, and Adam Hayes and wife, Kristie. A future great-grandson, Hunter Addison Hayes also survives. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, September 4, 2005 at 8:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Paul Horton officiating. Graveside Services will be held Monday, September 5, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Thomas Cemetery, Marion, Virginia where military services will be conducted by Francis Marion V.F.W. Post #4667. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 p.m. until the time of the services at Seaver-Brown Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 246, Abingdon, Virginia 24212 or to the American Legion Post #18, P.O. Box 1011, Marion, Virginia 24354.
