So sorry Marty ~ such an admirable man. I was fortunate to work with him while directing Bethel's preschool. A very special memory was - at my request, him baptizing my niece Alaina Anderson at Fairfax Hospital's NICU. This struggling baby will celebrate her 23rd birthday this year. Love and condolences to you and family.

Hello, and I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Pastor Copenhaver. I've resided in Arlington County, VA since 1975 and started attending Resurrection Lutheran Church (RELC) in Arlington shortly after moving here. Pastor Copenhaver and his assistant David Schafer I clearly remember. Pastor Copenhaver had a voice and manner that (along with the Holy Spirit) made one hunger to hear the Word. I missed him greatly when he departed RELC. A true disciple of our Lord. All my best to the Copenhaver family and yours in Christ,
John Wood

Dear Marty and Family,
I am so very to learn of Gene's passing. Please know that I will be thinking of you and praying for you in the days ahead.
I have so many wonderful memories of Gene and the great times we shared over the years and especially those at Trinity Lutheran in Pulaski. He was a wonderful Pastor to our family and a mentor to me and so many others.

The man with the VOICE. I will never forget him. Pastor Copenhaver was the last word of advice that I took when having to make a very difficult decision about the custody of my young son. After hearing all the facts he simply looked at me as said "Herb, you don't have a choice" and it was clear that he was right. The events that followed could be called a miracle and probably saved my son's life. I think of him and Marty often and I will never forget his kind and gentle manner and his sage advice. Thank you Pastor Gene

Gene was a most faithful, devoted member of the National Lutheran Home's Board of Trustees for eight years. As the Home's former executive director, I could always rely on Gene for his wise counsel and devoted service to the Home and its residents.

Dear Martha and others dear to Gene: Grace and Peace from our Lord Jesus! We grieve with you at Gene's death. You may not remember us but we were classmates at LTSS (Gene was student body pres our sr year and i was class pres.). I regret that we did not remain close after graduation but did follow his wonderful ministry (starting out at my grandfather George Rhodes first parish at Pulaski (my mom was then born at Rural Retreat).
Gene was special to all of us who knew and loved him "back in the day." May you know God's Comfort and Peace.
In Christ's love, David & Diana Keck

Though we didn't know one another, his death deserves a tribute. I'm very impressed by his service to church and community. If my publisher permits late additions, I'll try to add some of his activities to a manuscript due for publication next February as an example of how the church members (pastor, in this case) serve not only one another but the larger community. Dear Marty, I was sorry to read of Gene's passing. I can't remember when my brother Jack Lindsey and Gene were not friends. JackfBgTI told our brother Joe, that Gene was his best friend all the years growing up. They were born seven days apart and lived close enough to play together as children, attend and confirmed in same church and honor Jack and Steb as Best Man at their wedding. He and you Marty were the best. We send our regards to you and your wonderful family. I will always remember both of you.

Dear Marty and family:
On behalf of the members of Trinity Lutheran in Pulaski (Woman's Memorial before Pastor Copenhaver and you arrived), I wish to extend our deepest sympathy and prayers for your loss. We still have a number of members who were here during Pastor Copenhaver's and your time in Pulaski, and they always speak warmly of your time here!
In the short 4 years you were here, Pastor Copenhaver made a huge impact on our peoples' lives, our youths' lives, and the community around us. He helped the congregation reclaim its originally-planned name, and even recently was able to join us for Zoom worship! These past 56 years were fruitful for his as an ordained minister of the Gospel in spite of his declining vigor.
We wish we could share in a fitting service for Pastor Copenhaver - so sorry that things are not as usual for that. As you journey forward, know that you all are much loved, and we will ask for God's sweet comfort and peace for you, trusting in the joy of the resurrection through Jesus Christ. God bless you and keep you.

I was, I believe, six years old when Pastor Copenhaver came to University Lutheran Church in Clemson, SC. He taught my confirmation class. He performed my confirmation ceremony. He performed the marriage ceremonies for both of my sisters, and for myself. He was always a warm and caring man. Nicknamed "Rev" by the students of Clemson University, if I remember correctly. I can remember sitting on the front pew, directly in front of Pastor Copenhaver, during church service, with his daughter, Becky, when we were quite young, The two of us cut up terribly but he never said a word to us. How we must have tried his patience! :) He always had a smile and a kind word for all, along with a laugh or two. I used to stop by his office at our church, as a teenager, just to say hello, and pass the time for a few minutes. He was there for you in good times and bad. There will never be another like him. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers go to you, Marty, Becky, Michael, and all of your family.
