Dear David and Family,
We are so saddened at your father"s passing. Our whole family loved, admired, and respected Bill as we did your mother. Bill was always the same: a friend to everyone and solid as a rock. I knew him best from church where he was a role model of character and Christian living. He loved Davis Memorial and supported her through many ministers and projects over the years. I always considered your dad to be my friend and someone I could turn to if I ever needed help or advice. Bill"s beautiful voice added so much to worship service and choir and it will be sorely missed. We both attended Rebecca"s Bible Study and I developed a kinship with your father because I learned that he and I had the exact same thoughts about going to heaven. He knows now exactly how it is. I loved him and will miss him terribly.
We are out of town this week and will not be able to be with you. My mother is crushed at your father's death and is having a very difficult time accepting it. Please know your entire family is in our thoughts and prayers. The Greer family grieves with you. Gina and Rex send their deepest sympathy. You have our love and support always.

Family of Bill Smith: It was with regret that I read of Bill's death. It was our privilege to have known and worked with him when we were living in Marion. He was a classmate of my wife Betty in high school and we joined him in many activities in Marion. Our prayers for your comfort and support during this time.

Bill was my second cousin on my father's side of the family. His mother Elizabeth Harper Smith was my grandfather's sister. My grandfather was Arch Harper Sr and my Dad was Archie Harper Jr.. I remember going to Aunt Lizzie and Uncle Paul home in Marion when I was a little girl. Bill was 23 years older than I, so he was out on his own when I got to visit them. I always admired him but we never had family reunions and our paths were in different directions. I want to send my sympathy and prayers for the family. May the love of those around you help you through the days ahead. I believe that when we lose someone close to us they still live through us and give us strength. David, Patsy, Connie and Paul hold tight to Bill's memory for comfort, those memories are his legacy of love to you all.
With hugs and prayers,
Jody Harper Olinger

I had the honor of getting to know "Bill" in the last 10 years or so through his son, Dave. Both Bill and his wife Shirley were wonderful people who were always gracious and very accommodating. Bill was a very wise person who I can't imagine was ever mad- he seemed to always have a sunny countenance.
We shared interests in golf, Hokie football and I enjoyed hearing Bill tell of his past and getting his thoughts on various current topics- be it politics or how good the Hokies would be this year.
Although not with me, he scored a hole in one on my home course (#17) and I have often thought of Bill (and Dave- my good friend) when I come upon that tee box.
Bill (& Shirley) will be missed but I feel richly rewarded after getting to know him through the past years.
