Obituary of Julie Ann Burch McGregor

MARION, Va.

 

JULIE ANN BURCH McGREGOR, age 75, died Saturday, April 06, 2019.

 

Julie was born in Pittsburgh, Penn. and at the age of 3 her family moved to Lynchburg, Va. She was educated in Lynchburg City Schools, graduated from E.C. Glass High School and attended Longwood College (now University) in Farmville, Va.

 

After her marriage to Duncan McGregor in 1962, they moved to Los Angeles, Cali. And in a few years moved again to Richmond, Va. She began a career in insurance and then moved in 1970 to Marion, Va.

 

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, an active supporter of the Smyth Bland Regional Library and Junior Woman’s Club. In 1974 she became the first woman to receive the Citizen of the Year Award presented by the Marion Rotary Club because of her outstanding contributions to the community, including her tireless efforts to obtain fluoride in the Thomas Bridge Water System.

 

Julie could be found on the tennis court, lifeguarding the neighborhood kids in their backyard pool and was very active in local, state and national politics. She was an avid reader and animal lover, especially of Siamese cats.

 

She was preceded in death by her father and step-mother, Howard E. Burch and Helen B. Burch of Newark, Ohio; her mother and step-father, Julia Worthington Vaughan and Charles Vaughan of Lynchburg, Va.; sister-in-law, Cathy M. McGregor of Richmond, Va.

 

Julie is survived by her husband of 56 years, Duncan Clark McGregor of Marion, Va.; daughter, Anne Clark McGregor Rooks and husband, Gene Rooks of Raleigh, N.C.; son, Michael David McGregor and wife, Nikki S. McGregor; grandchildren, Adam Michael McGregor and Whitney Nicole McGregor, all of Radford, Va.; sisters, Mary Ellen Burch of Albuquerque, N.M. and Carolyn L. Vaughan of Lynchburg, Va.; brothers-in-law, R.J. McGregor, Jr. of Richmond, Va. and Malcolm H. McGregor and wife, Anne McGregor of Louisa, Va.; five nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; and a special cousin, Robert F. MacGregor, Jr. of Smithfield, Va.

 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 12 noon at the First United Methodist Church sanctuary. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:45 until 11:45 in the church parlor prior to the service.

 

Graveside Services will be held Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 12 noon at the Spring Hill Cemetery, 3000 Fort Ave., Lynchburg, Va. 24501.
