I am 3 years older than Edwin and knew him when I was in about 8th grade there at Marion High School. My father worked at the State Hospital and we lived just down the street from the Whitmore family and counted all the family as friends. We lived just a few doors down from the family on what was known as "Hospital Hill".
When I knew Edwin he was called "Sonny". He loved baseball and as best I can recall could name the batting scores of many of the star players. When we left Marion several years later I lost track of the Whitmore family as I moved on with my own life but always had fond memories of the family and the good times we had together.
I was truly amazed at Edwin's accomplishments as he moved along in time and the many contributions he made to his community. If every citizen made the contributions to their own communities we would be living in a very different world.
Thank you, Edwin, for the memories and the outstanding example of a life well lived and your service to every community that you were a part of. Thank you for showing us all "how it is done".
My Regards to All of Your Family,
David & Anne Gibson-Alexick

I just happened across the news of Eddy's passing. I offer my condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends. My relationship with Eddy goes back to my childhood days and included many summers playing baseball with Eddy. He lived only a short distance from my grandparents on Lee Street.
He was always a friend and I wish I had known him as an adult. I see we shared the love of sports and even the Kiwanis affiliation. I am sure his courage, devotion to his community, and service to others will long be honored and remembered.

Ed was a huge asset to economic development efforts throughout SW VA. I was blessed to have known and worked with him in some of those efforts. His wit, wisdom, and willingness to help anyone he could were inspirational. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

My condolences on Eddie's illness and passing. I, too, was a longtime Dominion employee and knew him in his commercial lender days - and even better when he shifted to the holding company to do economic development and lobbying. In both roles he was an energetic advocate for his company, and for southwest Virginia. He continued that tradition of service to his home area in his post-banking roles. Southwest Virginia will miss one of its most loyal sons.

I recall well the efforts you gave when we were able to deliver Internet by satellite to two schools in Clifton Forge. It turned out to be a remarkable incident for its time, supported by your forward thinking and desire to see children succeed in their academics.
Thank you for calling me your friend.

I remember most when Roy Coats and I used to ride our bicycles to the hospital area that Ed’s father ran. It was a mental hospital and biking through the grounds as a kid was scary somewhat with the people hanging out on the porches. Roy and I used to play bridge with Ed and his father so it was quite an experience. Will always miss Ed and playing golf with him.

Bev and family,
I was so sorry to learn of Eddie’s health struggles and passing. My fondest memories of my young adult life include Eddie, who introduced me to Don. Bev, you and Eddie were our “double-date” for the first date I enjoyed with Don, grilling steak & eating together on Cherry Street, even visiting The Wagon Wheel! So many wonderful memories come back including our camping experience to try out Bev’s new tent. Don’s pup tent (unlike Bev’s tent) was put up in one “swoop.” (Thunder storm, wet steaks, early breakfast at Cherry Street.) I could go on & on. I always admired Eddie. He was a “love my community” guy who achieved much for that area, always having the best interest of Smyth County at heart. God bless you, Bev and family. “A life well-lived,” Ed. Love and deepest sympathy to each of you. Mary Lynn Hammer

I never heard my grandparents talk about anyone’s bridge playing “strategy” like they did Eddie Whitmore when he played with Uncle Bob Estep. It would not be uncommon for them to play until the wee hours of the night (morning). He did not mind going down as long as he could keep them from a rubber! His presence was always welcomed. His charm, intellect & wit always lightened the mood. The Christmas Party was not complete without Ed and Bev! He is with God now & he probably has the souls in heaven in stitches. God bless Eddie. He will not be forgotten!

I will miss him.
Beverly, thank you so very much for taking such good care of my friend. As I told him before, you are a saint for putting up with him.
