Obituary of Clifford Rowland

MARION, VIRGINIA: CLIFFORD KELLY ROWLAND, age 87, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2005 in Smyth County Community Hospital. Born June 30, 1917 in Pipestem, West Virginia, to the late Nora Meador and Kelly Lee Rowland, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 and served with the United States Navy during World War II as a communication specialist on the flagship for the Atlantic Fleet. He began his career with Appalachian Power Company in 1948 in Clintwood, Virginia, transferred to Marion, Virginia in 1965 where he retired in 1982. Mr. Rowland was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and a Boy Scout Leader in Clintwood, the Marion Rotary Club, and was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. He dedicated his life to caring for and enjoying his family and he will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, George Robert Rowland. Mr. Rowland is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret Rowland of Marion, Virginia. Three daughters, Elizabeth Rowland-Roth and husband, David of Babylon, New York; Mary Rowland Hughes and husband, Jerry of Roanoke, Virginia; and Ruth Rowland Able and husband, Pete of Marion, Virginia. One son, John Rowland and wife, Phyllis of Manassas, Virginia. Ten grandchildren, John T. Rowland, Erik Linkous, Robert Rowland, John D. Rowland, Aaron Roth, Norah Roth, Samuel Roth, Meaghan Coates, Mathew Able, and Josh Able also survive. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated by Father Paul Maier Saturday, June 25, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the St. John's Catholic Church Building Fund, 124 Park Blvd, Marion, Virginia 24354.
