What a shock! So sorry to hear the news. I was trying to call Richard to ask him about his dear sister. We've lost contact. Was it Richard or Bill I first met when they were searching for their youngest sister back in '74? She was hiding under our dining room table. God be with you at this time, and I hope there are so many happy memories.

Like many others, I'm still processing his passing.
Rick was a voice of wit, wisdom and compassion
that I will miss every day. Despite the many challenges he faced, he was staunch and had a good attitude about life. As time passes we will all have to adjust to his absence, but he will always be the smartest person I ever knew. I miss you Rick. R.I.P. my friend.

Please accept my deepest sympathy on Rick's death. I worked with him at the Watauga Regional Library in Johnson City. In fact, I hired Rick. It was one of the smartest things I ever did! I think he was kind of surprised to get the job, because it was a tech job and he had an English background. But I could tell he knew enough about computers to do what we needed, plus he obviously had a deep love of learning, which is what libraries are all about. Anyway, after we both left that agency we stayed in touch via Facebook, and I became a big fan of all the articles and music that he posted. He was such a generous person with a big heart. It wasn't always obvious, necessarily, but the more I learn about him the more I know it to be true. It was hard seeing him have to go through having his leg amputated; that must've been hard on you all as well. But he bore up through it all, at least on Facebook, so there was always this sense that Rick would just carry on. And now he's gone. I'm glad he didn't have to suffer, but I'm very sad and will miss him a lot. If there is a charity you all would like to support in Rick's name, please let me know.

When I was a kid just out of college, I took a bad job doing customer service for Dish Network. The reason that it was tolerable at all was because of the weird old dude (old to my young eyes, that is) who worked on my "team." He recognized in me a fellow counterculture enthusiast, and we traded books and albums while we bonded over mocking our bosses.
Later he found me on Facebook and we continued our discussion about music, literature, and subversive thought. We were never very close, but his influence on me was significant.
I'm listening to lots of weird psychedelic music in your honor, Richard. Glad to have known you.
