James Holman

Obituary of James W. "Jim" Holman

Marion, Va.

James W. “Jim” Holman, 76, made Heaven a little sweeter when he went home to be with his Lord on Friday, May 25, 2018, following a long battle with illness.

He was born on November 15, 1941 in the Attoway Community to the late William E. & Hazel S. Holman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Joseph Holman; four sisters, Mary Huffman, Katherine Greek, Barbara Adams and Lois Holman; and his life-long best friend and farming buddy, Fletcher Cale.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy Darnell Holman of Marion, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and John Crouse of Chilhowie, Va.; son, Joey Holman of Marion, Va.; beloved grandson, Andrew Crouse of Chilhowie; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

With the exception of the time he served in the United States Air Force as a refueling tanker crew chief, Jim lived his entire life in the community where he was born. He was a faithful and devoted member of Falling Water Baptist Church and served on numerous committees and staff positions throughout his lifetime.  When there was work to be done, Jim was always found right in the middle, doing whatever he could to help. Jim had many interests and was rarely found sitting still. He loved flying, farming with Andrew and restoring antique vehicles with his son, Joey. He was the founder and CEO of Smyth County Machine & Welding in Atkins, a venture which probably showcased his “never stop trying” attitude better than any other. He influenced countless lives and his sarcastic wit, humor and tenacity will forever be remembered by those who loved him.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 27, 2018 at 4 p.m. at Falling Water Baptist Church, Marion, Va. with the Reverend Jerry Creasy officiating. Burial will follow in Attoway Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and Francis Marion VFW Post #4667. The family will receive friends and loved ones Sunday from 2 until 4 p.m. at Falling Water Baptist Church, Marion, Va.
