Obituary of Roger Barry Shields
MARION, Va.
Roger Barry Shields, age 56, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2018.
He was the owner of Marion Electric Company since 1991. He and his late father started Marion Electric Company in 1969 in the old John Deere building. Roger was a 1983 graduate of Virginia Tech, with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He loved to share his extreme knowledge of firearms with friends or strangers. Roger was an avid outdoorsman and loved his beagles. One of his greatest joys for over 29 years was handing out candy every Sunday at Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member. His favorite thing was to sponsor the Stick Horse Event at the Rich Valley Fair for the last 26 years; giving every child a $2 bill to go buy ice cream. Roger coached recreational sports for many years and loved to tease the referees every chance he got; they loved his sense of humor. But first and foremost, his love for family and God were the most important things in Roger’s life. Especially his two sons, whom he always made sure they were taken care of. He always taught them to have good character, and never lose your morals; to believe if someone started something they had finish it and to try and have a good sense of humor.
Roger is survived by his wife of almost 34 years, Juanita Shields; two sons, Ryan Shields and wife, Ginny Moorer-Shields, all of Marion, Va. and Hunter Shields and girlfriend, Leslie Dominguez of Chicago, Ill.; very special little buddy, Keegan Henson that he loved dearly; special niece, Christie Croye and husband, Kyle of Bluefield, W.Va.; very special great-niece Kylie Croye; two special great-nephews, Joey Croye and Chase Lowe; an amazing Aunt Clara “Butchie” Severt all of Bluefield, W. Va.; mother-in-law, Goldie Harris of Ceres, Va.; several other nephews, special cousins, a sister, family and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 7 p.m. at Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Reverend Mike Sage officiating. Family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church.
