Obituary of Floyd Clayton Wolfe
MARION, Va.
Floyd Clayton Wolfe age 91, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was born April 10, 1926 in Marion, Va. to the late Floyd and Hattie Wolfe. He graduated from Marion Senior High School in 1944. He was an avid football and basketball player in high school. Floyd joined the Army Air Corp in August 1944 and was stationed in multiple areas such as Germany, Saudi Arabi, and Newfoundland. He was a “Cold War Vet” involved with Operation Chrome Dome, flying B-52’s to the Artic Circle and back. Floyd was assigned to the Presidential Squadron at Andrews Air Force Base with the Presidential Doomsday Airplane. He also served one tour in Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force after serving his country for 26 years in 1970 with the rank of SMSGT. He was a member of Francis Marion VFW Post #4667. He later retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after working at Big Walker Mountain Tunnel. He will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Wolfe and sister, Doris Clawson.
Floyd is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jean Wolfe; son, Gary Wolfe and wife, Carol, all of Marion, Va.; two grandchildren, Amy Wolfe of Knoxville, Tenn. and Aaron Wolfe and girlfriend, Kim Hull, currently of Austell, Ga.; sister, Frances Horne of Sugar Grove, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Per his wishes, viewing and all services will be private, with Military Rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and Francis Marion VFW Post # 4667.
