Obituary of William Lee Martin

William Lee (W.L.)

W.L. Martin age 90, of Laurel Fork, Va. died Sunday, December 17, 2017 at Valley Health Care in Chilhowie, Va. He was born on May 23, 1927 in Six, West Va.; the son of the late Hubert F. and Lettie O. Martin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey G. Martin; a son, Benny Martin; brothers Elton E. Martin, Ralph K. Martin, and Hubert F. Martin, Jr.

He is survived by four sisters, Sibil Martin Turner, Glenda Martin Fontaes, Willodean Martin Burke, and Fay Martin Nail. One son, Jimmy Martin and wife, Amy. Three grandchildren, Amanda Martin, J.W. Martin, Jessica Rakes; one great grandchild, Brantley Wayne Rakes; and a special friend, Penny Arnold.

W.L. discontinued his education after completing seventh grade to work on the family farm and help raise his seven siblings. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during W.W. II. During his tour, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant/Tank Commander. He also received the Victory Medal. After returning home from the military, he pursued several different career paths including welder, farmer, auto body mechanic, and long haul truck driver. His lack of a formal education was overcome by a dedication to strong work ethic.

After sustaining a severe spinal cord injury in a truck accident, he was forced to retire at age 60. Through rehabilitation and a strong-willed determination, he returned to a life of part time gentleman farmer, fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His memory will be cherished by all who have known "OLE MAN MARTIN."

At Mr. Martin's request, there will be no public services.
