Uncle Fred and Aunt Gray have always held a special place in my heart. While attending college in Fort Lauderdale, I would drive to Miami on weekends to visit them. They were so welcoming and kind to me and treated me like their son. Such fond memories of our trips to their house in Key Largo and attending Miami Dolphin games. I've always been so appreciative of their hospitality and generosity.
Although Fred rarely spoke of his distinguished service during WWII, he was a true hero of the Greatest Generation.

My heart and prayers go out to everyone today as you say a final goodby to Uncle Fred. Although he wasn't technically my 'uncle', he and Aunt Gray always made me feel special and like one of the Fowler family. Wish I could be in Virginia to share this sensitive and special day with my cousins and friends.
In reading the beautifully written obit, I learned more about Uncle Fred and only wish that we could have spent more time together.

"Uncle" Fred was a special man to Herb & Margie Perkins and their family. He was always fun to be with at the many family gatherings our families enjoyed together. At age "90" he was still hiding and hunting Easter Eggs! I will remember him, his pleasant personality and the many times we enjoyed together.

Dear Uncle Fred:
I have so many wonderful memories of you and aunt Gray. I took my first airplane to visit you in Florida. I always looked forward to visiting with you. You were always a special person to me. I will never ever forget you.
I love you and I wished I could be there Saturday but you will always be in my heart.

Uncle Fred was one of the greatest of the Greatest Generation. He was invariably kind and generous. He was always encouraging and as referenced by his military experience brave and honorable. He will be missed. With his passing the direct link to the family heroes from WWII is broken; however, his memory will long be cherished.

"Uncle Fred" was a wonderful example of the Greatest Generation. He was kind, generous, upbeat, and an all-around good guy. He was not the type to talk about the medals he earned while bravely serving his country and protecting our freedom. He greeted everyone with a smile and a kind word, and he had a way of making everyone feel special. He was also strong, agile and gentle. When I was a teenager, "Uncle Fred" taught me how to water ski - not by calling out instructions from afar in the boat. He got in the water and skied right beside me, encouraging and coaching me until I succeeded. That perseverance and positive, can-do attitude was fun to be around and a great example that I have often recalled when facing challenges later in life. All kids should be so lucky as to have an "Uncle Fred" in their lives! I am very thankful for the blessing that he was in mine. You will be missed, "Uncle Fred," but I take comfort in knowing that you have gone on to a better place, to join loved ones who brought joy to your life - especially "Aunt Gray." Love always, Suzan
