Obituary of Zelma Pauline "Polly" Atkins
ATKINS, Va.
Zelma Pauline “Polly” Atkins, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at her son’s home in Atkins.
Polly was born in Louden, TN to the late Frank and Emma-Ida Allmon. She graduated from Marion High School in 1944 and was later employed with the Hosiery Mill in Marion. She met and married George Robert Atkins and became a homemaker. Polly was a member of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church in Atkins where she taught Sunday school and bible school for numerous years. She never missed a service! Her love for her Lord was evident in the time she spent in her daily Bible reading. She loved her church family and friends, and certainly loved spending time with them. Polly enjoyed being outside on the family farm and had a love for animals. She loved spending time with her son, John, and her grandsons, Ben and Nathan as much as possible. The same came true with the birth of her great-granddaughter’s, Morgan and recently, Reagan. She truly had the heart of a child! She was Morgan’s “little granny.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, George Robert Atkins; three sisters, Bessie Sigmon, Genevieve Hutton, and Hazel Williams; four brothers, Herbert, Fred, James, and David Allmon.
Family remaining to cherish her memory includes her son, John Atkins and wife, Dorothy, who cared for Polly for the last five and a half years in their home; daughter, Patsy Atkins Edmonds; grandchildren, Ben and wife, Jenny, Nathan and wife, Missie, and Melanie Edmonds Titmus; great-granddaughters, Morgan (age 11), and Reagan (19 months); two special nieces, Tracy Williams Crowe and Sheila Hutton; two special nephews, Stewart and Ray Sigmon; numerous other nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ron and Jane Cumbow, Joe and Margaret Hall, John and Betty Matheney, and friend and neighbor, Doug Hash.
The family wishes to express a special thanks to Eva Eastridge, Polly’s nurse’s aide. Eva and Polly certainly acquired a special bond over time. Polly always kept a smile when Eva was around. The family would also like to thank Polly’s nurse, Kortney Clear of Home Nursing Service of S.W. Virginia; her nurse, Emma McCracken of Hometown Hospice for all their loving care. They would also like to thank their Cedar Bluff Baptist Church family for all the prayers and phone calls; to Doug Hash for the many visits and his attention to Polly; Regina Thomas, her hair stylist and friend, and last, but certainly not least, to Missie Atkins for her love, support, and attention given to Polly.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor Justin Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
