Obituary of Dorothy Ely Huntley

MARION, Va. / NORTHERN CAMBRIA, Pa.

DOROTHY ELY HUNTLEY, age 94 died Thursday, September 28, 2017 in Rebekah Manor, Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania.

Dorothy was born in Buffalo Township, Pennsylvania on September 25, 1923 to the late William Alexander and Florence Leech Ely. She grew up outside Washington, Pennsylvania and attended State Teachers College in Indiana, Pennsylvania, where she graduated with a B.S. in education. In November 1946, she married James Benjamin Huntley, who later became a Lutheran pastor. Dorothy was very active in the Lutheran churches she belonged to; teaching Sunday school or confirmation classes, singing in or directing various church choirs, and participating in women’s Bible and study groups. She sewed numerous garments and quilts for family members and friends over the years. She sang in many choirs, including Joyful Noise Choir which visited nursing homes and sang at Memorial Day celebrations. Dorothy taught in elementary schools in Pennsylvania and Ohio in earlier years. She taught reading in the Blue Ridge Job Corps in Marion, Virginia for several years until she retired at the age of 67.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend James Benjamin Huntley; son, Robert Alexander Huntley; brothers, Paul Leech Ely and wife, Gail Hamilton Ely, and Harold Alexander Ely.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Anne E. G. Berish and husband, Gary of Patton, Pennsylvania; one granddaughter, Johanna P. Olson and husband, Michael; one great-granddaughter, Miranda K. Olson who was born on Dorothy’s 91st birthday; one niece and two nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Rebekah Manor in Northern Cambria and the personnel of Medi-Home Hospice for their personalized, courteous care of Dorothy in recent years. Thanks go also to 365 Hospice for their care in Dorothy’s final hours; and to Seaver-Brown Funeral Service and Crematory (in Marion, Virginia) and Moriconi Funeral Home (in Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania) for the final arrangements.

Memorial Services will be held as follows:  Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel in Marion, Virginia. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, Virginia.

Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 12 noon at Trinity United Methodist Church, 501 Beech Avenue, Patton, Pennsylvania 16668. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 11:30 until 12 noon at the church. 

Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 500 Allegheny Street, Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, 16648 (corner of Allegheny and Union Streets). The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church.
