Obituary of Sara Ann Grahame Clay

MARION, Va.

Sara Ann Grahame Clay, age 79, died Monday, July 24, 2017 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va.

Sara Clay was married for 50 years to N. Lewis Clay, former principal of Marion Junior High School, who passed away in 2008. She was a mother to two sons, and a prominent figure in the Marion Downtown business community. She opened Sara’s Jewelry in 1995 and served thousands of folks over the years. Sara was the past president of the Marion Junior Women’s Club, a certified diamond appraiser, and a successful business owner. Sara was proud to be a direct descendent of the first governor of Maryland, Thomas Johnson.

She is survived by her sons, William L. “Bill” Clay of Marion, Va. and Robert Edward “Ed” Clay and wife, Cheri, of Holly Springs, N.C.; granddaughter, Ashley Elizabeth Clay of King, N.C.; and caregiver and friend, Maria Crewey of Rural Retreat, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Pastor Mike Sage officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12 noon until the time of service. Inurnment will be private.
