Obituary of Peggy Smith Goodman

Marion, Virginia

Peggy Smith Goodman, 82, passed away peacefully at Valley Health Care in Chilhowie, VA on Sunday, April 30, 2017. She was born on July 20, 1934 in Cleghorn Valley (Marion), VA, to the late Paul and Elizabeth Harper Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Eugene (Whitey) Goodman; and her sister, Sandra S. Jurkiewicz.

Peggy was a lifelong member of Laurel Springs United Methodist Church, where she taught Gods word to numerous children as a Sunday School Teacher.She was also a member of the church Choir.

She was certainly known as an avid bowler! Peggy bowled in 40 plus state tournaments and was inducted into the M.W.B.A Hall of Fame in 1998.

She was a loyal Virginia Tech Hokie fan and never missed a Hokie football game!

Peggy was a graduate of Marion Sr. High School. She served on the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Theatre. She worked tirelessly, alongside others to help renovate the theatre. Her work has certainly paid off, as many come from all around to attend the numerous venues at the very theatre she once sold tickets during the early 50’s.

Above all, Peggy will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, “Granna,” and friend to all who knew her. She will be missed!

Family remaining to cherish her memory include her daughters, Theressa Goodman Johnson and husband, Chuck of Marion, VA, and Kim Goodman Green and husband, William of Roanoke, VA; sisters, Patsy Smith Bales and Connie Smith Blevins, both of Marion, VA; brothers, William D. Smith of Marion, VA and Paul Smith and wife, Karen of Timberville, VA; sisters-in-law,  Tammy Winebarger and husband, Allan, and Peggy Dean, all of Marion, VA; 3 grandchildren, Sarah Hamm and husband, Derek of Marion, VA, Britt Johnson and wife, Becky of Chilhowie, VA, and Adam Miller of Sugar Grove, VA; 8 great-grandchildren, BreeAnna Gates, Dakota, Devin and Jacqualine Hamm, Sophie and Addy Miller, and Landon and Abraham Johnson; special niece, Christy Woodruff and husband, Ben; and a special nephew, Eric Winebarger. Numerous other nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Seaver-Brown Funeral Home in Marion. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 2 p.m. in Seaver-Brown Chapel, with Pastor Mark Totten officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery in Marion.
