I wish I could say that this lady taught me to love reading, but she didn't. While that honor goes to Harry Potter and his brave little self, Dr. Hamm taught me to appreciate and treasure literature instead.
Her senior English class at CHS was eyeopening. That was my first foray into thinking critically about literature, and partly because of her, I have a Bachelors of Arts in English Lit hanging on my bedroom wall. Through her class, I learned so much about the hidden meaning behind an author's words and just how that can impact the time period and people in and of which it was written. It was there in her class that I first read Orwell, Tolkien, Wells, and so many others, and fell in love with their lives and stories. It was in her class that I found a part of myself that I never even knew existed.
I don't know if she ever knew just how much of an influence she had on me or in the lives of her other students, but I do know that because I knew her and had her as an instructor, I have been changed for the better.
My heart aches at your loss, and I am wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead, and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Hamm, may the Lord provide peace and comfort during the difficult days and weeks to come. I knew Dr. Hamm as Mrs. Hamm, my senior English teacher.
