Obituary of Kate Noonkester Legard

MARION, Va. Kate Noonkester Legard of Stuart, VA, formerly of Bassett, VA, passed away at Pioneer Hospital in Stuart on September 7, 2016. She was born December 17, 1932 to Reggie and Arcie Noonkester in Grayson County. Kate grew up in Marion Va. and was a graduate of Marion College. Relocating to Bassett, Va., she was employed by Stanley Furniture for 29 years and retired as executive secretary. She was a faithful member of Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Director and Deacon. Kate's kind spirit and cheerful disposition will be missed by all. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter T. Legard, brothers, Dr. J. Ralph Noonkester and Clarence Noonkester and sister Judith Noonkester. She is survived by one sister, Loretta (Bill) Crismond of Bedford VA, daughters, Susan (Neil) Maxey of Walnut Cove and Kathy (Brent) Legard-Lavinder of Bassett, two grandchildren, Sarah Maxey of Ithaca NY and Gabriel Maxey of Walnut Cove, NC. Special thanks to the staff at Landmark Assisted Living Center for all of their gracious care. Graveside services will be held Friday, September 9, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Marion, Va. A Memorial service will be held Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 3 p.m. at Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church in Bassett Va. with the Reverend George Hearn presiding with the visitation/reception following the service.
