Obituary of Raymond Vance Shingler

ABINGDON, Va. Raymond Vance Shingler, age 82, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Johnston Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Ray was born November 21, 1933 in Charleston, W.Va. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He was a Certified Public Accountant and was retired from the West Virginia Healthcare Cost Review Authority. Ray was a past member of the Abingdon Rotary Club. He loved attending plays at the Barter Theatre and was a patron of the theatre. He was a member of the “McDonald’s Breakfast Club” and enjoyed the camaraderie. Ray was a faithful member of the Abingdon Church of Christ. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Mary Jane Shingler; sons, Robert Shingler and wife, Susan of Summersville, S.C. and Raymond V. Shingler, Jr. of Charleston, S.C.; step-daughter and care-giver, Cathy McClanahan and husband, Jack of Big Stone Gap, Va.; step-sons, Jerry Swanson, Jr. and wife, Debborrah of Ghent, W. Va., and Stuart Swanson and wife, Leslie of Roanoke, Va.; several grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Special thank you to his angel caregiver, Connie Willis who gave patient and tireless care to Ray in his final months. The family wishes to thank Ray’s church family, especially Lana McClanahan for all their loving care and support, during his illness. A note of appreciation goes to all friends and neighbors who brought food and lent assistance, especially Connie and J.B. Kinder. Also many thanks to the kind and caring staff at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Va. and Heritage Hall of Big Stone Gap, Va. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Abingdon Church of Christ with Bill Haywood, Minister, officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Abingdon Church of Christ, P.O. Box 604, Abingdon Va. 24212.
