Obituary of George Burkett

RURAL RETREAT, Va.: GEORGE NEAL BURKETT, JR. age 64, died Saturday, November 28, 2015 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. George Burkett was a loving husband, daddy and papaw George. He was proud of his service with the 82nd Airborne of the U.S. Army where he earned the National Defense Service Medal. George loved his family, his country and his Lord. If you were traveling Davis Valley Road, you'd see him waving at you from his porch as George had never met a stranger. His girls proudly say George was "our daddy and your friend." He will be missed by so many, especially his pound-dog, Boone Dock Burkett. George is survived by his wife, Mona Burkett of Rural Retreat, Va.; two daughters, Deanne Burkett Bonham and husband, Victor of Marion, Va. and Jennifer Lee Burkett; mother, Ethel Maxey Burkett; brother, Phillip Burkett and special friend, Jennifer Mitchell, all of Rural Retreat, Va.; grandchildren, Matthew Hamm and Madilyn Bonham; step-children, Jasmine Utt, Josie Howell and Ariann Taylor; step-grandchildren, Bobby Joe Howell, Michael Rena Howell II, Charisma Jane Utt and Serenity Marie Utt; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Memorial services will be held Friday, December 4, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at Fulton United Methodist Church, Rural Retreat, Va. with Military Rites conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post #4667. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
