Obituary of Gordon Poe

MARION, VIRGINIA: GORDON RAY POE, age 88 died Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Francis Marion Manor, Marion, Virginia. He was born January 6, 1927 in Bluefield, West Virginia to the late Fred and Annie Davidson Poe. Following his graduation from Marion High School in 1944, he entered V.P.I. attending for two quarters, playing basketball and participating on the swim team, prior to enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps in 1945. He received his Basic Training in Sheppard Field, Texas, and Engineer Training at Kesler Field, Biloxi, Mississippi and Langley Field in Greensboro, North Carolina. Mr. Poe proudly served his country in World War II and was discharged from West Point Air Field in August, 1946. He then began to work for Brunswick in 1947. He again attended V.P.I. in 1948 and entered the National Business College in 1949. Mr. Poe then began working for ESSO in 1950, until becoming an agent for Equitable Life in June 1958, serving in a district management position from 1967 until retiring in 1982 however, he continued to serve as an agent. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Robinson Poe. Mr. Poe is survived by two daughters, Carol Poe of Marion, Virginia and Ann Lee DeSanto of Galax, Virginia; one son Mac Poe of Marion, Virginia; one brother Billy Poe of St. Louis, Missouri; five grandchildren, Sarah DeSanto, Allison DeSanto, Erica Poe, Andrea Poe, and Heather Poe; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Woody officiating. Burial will follow at the Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Rogers IDC, 271 Mountain Empire Road, Atkins, VA 24311, Attention: Darlene Dean.
