Obituary of Sylvia Gross Gilley

CHILHOWIE, VIRGINIA: SYLVIA VADIA GROSS GILLEY, age 95, died peacefully Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Virginia. Sylvia was born March 27, 1919 in Montcalm, West Virginia to the late Daniel and Minnie Gills Duncan. She married Mack M. Gross and was married for nearly fifty years. After they moved to Marion, Sylvia worked as a private duty caregiver and a homemaker. The couple welcomed seven children into their home. She was a wonderful and caring wife, mother and grandmother who will be remembered by her family as always being there when she was needed. Sylvia always enjoyed having a house full of family. She loved gardening, canning and fishing. She was always taking in some type of stray animal and nursing it back to health. She was a caregiver in every sense of the word and loved her family, friends and pets, especially her dogs. In addition to her parents and her first husband, Mack M. Gross, Sylvia was preceded in death by her second husband of twenty years, Earl Gilley; children, William Gross, Larry Gross, Mary Johnson, Pauline Slis, Josephine Ashbaugh and Betty Cramer. Sylvia is survived by one son, Robert Gross of Marion, Virginia; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
