I knew Virgil as a fellow Social Services Director.. While we were at opposite ends of the state we were always able to discuss our work, our frustrations and our successes. He was always a very positive person and true professional. My heartfelt condolences to all of the family and friends. He was a genuine person and someone I valued as a colleague. I know he will be missed by family and friends and also by his community. I am glad that Virgil was a part of my life for many years.

I knew Virgil in a professional capacity. He was a true Virginia gentleman who was never too busy to share his wisdom with a greenhorn. His compassion, caring and kind ways will be greatly missed by those of us who knew him as a Social Services Director. My prayers and thoughts are with his family during their time of loss.

Miller family, so sorry for your loss. Virgil was a wonderful person and I enjoyed working with him for many years. I worked in county treasure 's office for 44 years so I knew Virgil well. He was always a true gentlemen and friend to us all. He ran a great Social Services Dept. and he will be missed. Joyce, I know you will miss him as will the children and grandchildren. Just remember all the good things he did for lots of people .

Joyce, Carolyn, Brad, Mark and Miller families, God does have a plan...It's just kind of hard to read the blueprints through the tears sometimes. Our loved ones that are gone on to Heaven are in the LORD’s hand now and we will hold them close within our hearts. They will always be alive in our hearts and there they will remain, to walk with us throughout our lives, until we meet again. Time may pass and fade away, but memories of them will always stay. Death leaves a heart ache no one can heal....... Love leaves a memory no one can steal. When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a wonderful treasure. Their life here on earth was a blessing, they are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. May God bless you and your family. My prayers and deepest condolences are with you. Shall the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. Shall your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together that bring you comfort as you celebrate a life well lived. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Teresa & Ronnie (friends at WatersEdge Campground)

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Miller. Mr. Miller was a role model for many local social workers, as he was the Director of Smyth County Social Services for many years and served that position well with dignity and compassion. He was an advocate of those that were less fortunate and always had an open mind of how to make a positive difference in our community. He made each employee feel welcome at his agency by dropping in your office and sharing a cup of morning coffee and, of course, always knowing your families names. My condolences to Joyce and the all family members this week .

Joyce, I am sorry to read of Virgil's death in today's paper. You had a long marriage and I am certain his death leaves a hole in your lives, aches in your hearts. From a fellow 1961 J.I. Burton graduate, still living in the same place. Sharon
